Do you remember The Gallery Waikiki? It was Honolulu’s coolest cafe by day and hottest nightlife destination by night. Unfortunately, it was gentrified out of existence in early 2024 by the powers-that-be, along with a few other local businesses in the community. TheĀ Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber is now a somber shell of its former self, although it maintains the Hawaiian Aroma Caffe (best cafe in Waikiki) on the second floor to keep patrons refreshed and entertained from dawn til dusk.
But alas, Kalakaua Avenue’s loss is Kuhio Avenue’s gain. The owner lifted operations from the Beachcomber and over to a space adjacent to the Laylow Hotel. Rebranded as the Secret Spot, the ironically named establishment is now where locals and visitors alike gather in hoards for an experience unlike anywhere else on the island.
Secret Spot Honolulu is a hybrid concept that identifies as part cafe, eatery, art galley, bar and lounge. It shines on all accounts, but perhaps most brightly so as a nightlife destination. It’s why they’ve been added to our short list (very short list) of nightlife spots that are actually comparable to what revelers find in the hottest of mainland metropolises.
The Secret Spot’s weekly calendar of local bands and musicians serenades all who walk up the steps to the vibrant establishment, but be sure to come in the early evening to beat the nightly lineup. As we said, the name of the destination is pure irony. And what if you’re tired after a long day of island adventures, and unsure if you can hang? Fret not, because the Secret Spot’s inspired beer, wine, and cocktail menu will fuel late evening escapades with friends that you came with, and those you will invariably make while soaking up the scene.
