Antique and curio shopping on Oahu can be a frustrating experience. Sure, there are plenty of vintage shops on the island, but they focus on clothing, accessories, and their own branded merch, the latter of which has become a bit of a plague in the vintage industry. There is also the Wiki Wiki One Day Vintage Collectibles & Hawaiiana Show (view here), which is awesome, but it’s a seasonal affair that only runs four times a year. Proper antique and curio shops, however, are few and far between. The good news, is that your online search for “antique store Honolulu” has delivered you here. As curators of vintage Hawaiiana, our editorial staff has unanimously named one legitimate retailer in downtown Honolulu as the best antique store on Oahu – Hound & Quail.
Hound & Quail on Nuuanu Avenue is a beautiful and thoughtfully curated place that looks what you want an antique store to look like. Aesthetically, it’s the perfect juxtaposition of contemporary and old-fashioned. Meanwhile, the collection within has something for any gatherer of fine things from generations long gone (generally late-1800s to the mid-1900s). There is everything from suitcases and typewriters to heirloom furnishings and nautical wares. And as any local antique shop worth its salt, Hound & Quail boasts a number of treasures that harken back to life in old Hawaii. The prices are also surprisingly reasonable, especially for “smalls” like vintage books, magazines, and postcards (et cetera) which gives visitors an opportunity to leave with something, even if working with a small budget. Lastly, the no-pressure customer service is a pleasure. Patrons are greeted with ALOHA and left to enjoy their browsing experience in peace unless they have a question about something that catches their eye.
