Kukaimanini Island at Waiale’e Beach Park appears out of nowhere as you round Kamehameha Highway to or from the Turtle Bay Resort area. The beach itself is a hangout for fishermen and locals, and is a little too rough around the edges for most vacationers, but it’s absolutely worth a stop thanks to the little islet that’s a stone’s throw from its shore. You can simply enjoy the view and snap a few photos before heading out on your other adventures, or you can put on some goggles and explore the reef and even swim right up to Kukaimanini. You won’t need fins, but do wear reef shoes – it’s quite sharp! Under the surface you’ll spot sea turtles and a variety of tropical fish.
Caution: While the beach is perfectly safe, valuables will get snatched up quickly from unlocked cars and unattended beach towels. Proceed accordingly.
