The first thought to come to mind when looking up at the menu board at Waiola Shave Ice on Mokihana Street (located between famous Rainbow Drive-In and Leonard’s Bakery) is that it’s a no-frills place to get a brain freeze. But there’s so much more to it.

Inside you’ll find an large assortment of Hawaiian candies, sweets, and chews along with other sugary and salty snacks. Of course, the shave ice is also excellent, and is what has kept the Waiola brand in business for over eight decades and counting. None of this goes to their head, mind you. The prices remain low while they’re generous with their syrupy pours – something that few other shave ice spots on the island can claim. Their serving sizes aren’t near the monster bowls you get at Shimazu down the road, nor are they on this list of the Best Shave Ice in the World, but they are damn good. And on a hot sunny day on the South Shore, that’s all you really need.
